pCloud Vs Dropbox - A Comparative Analysis [Updated 2022]
pCloud vs Dropbox: Among the most popular cloud storage services, Dropbox is by far the most popular, with 500 million users, according to reports. Meanwhile, we’re talking about cloud storage, which recently reached 10 million users. In the past few years, they have steadily increased their user base, and this trend seems to continue. What’s going on? Many people use pCloud and even switch from Dropbox because of its many compelling features. The two will be compared and the winner will be announced at the end. Separate reviews for pCloud and Dropbox are also available.
Pricing & Plans
It’s interesting to see what pCloud can do. Free storage is offered up to 10 GB. All the other cloud storage services offer monthly plans that you can pay yearly to get a discount on the whole thing. Now here is where things get interesting. You can also get lifetime plans. You guessed it, for a one-time payment you will receive 500GB or 2000GB of cloud storage for 99 years, or until you die, whichever comes first! Several years ago, they were the first to introduce cloud storage to the market, and it seems to be working out well for them and their customers. However, they are not done yet. They also offer lifetime family plans. They definitely made my list of the “Best lifetime cloud storage plans”.
Their Crypto plan offers additional security for your files in addition to the standard plans. All plans are backed by a 10-day money-back guarantee.
It has been a while since Dropbox entered this game. The plan outlines what’s effective and what doesn’t and as such they know what works and what doesn’t. There are also differences in the amount of storage they provide and the features they offer. Nonetheless, there are other features not included in these plans for which an additional fee must be paid. If you opt-in for yearly payments, you can save 17% on all plans. In addition, all business plans still require VAT to be applied.
Is pCloud & Dropbox Easy to Use?
An easy-to-use interface makes it quite easy to use. The grid view and list view can be switched between. Uploading, sharing, collaborating, downloading and all other processes are easy to perform as buttons are located logically and at appropriate locations. The left-hand side of the screen also provides access to other options such as the Crypto folder, Shared files, and Audio files for quick access. It feels responsive and able to handle anything you set out to do.
In the dashboard, you can preview text and pdf files. Music and videos are also available.
They have changed a lot throughout the years and have come to what we have available now shown in the screenshot below. They are fairly intuitive and responsive. The left and right menus have a lot of options. Cloud storage is quite well known on the internet for its simplicity, but that trend has been around for a while. Today, all of the cloud storage services are quite simple to use and easy to understand.
In addition, you can work on documents, watch videos and listen to music directly from the Dropbox dashboard.
File Syncing with pCloud & Dropbox
pCloud Drive works with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. You install an application on your computer in order to use it. It allows you to save your files on an imaginary drive and does not use your local storage space unless you specifically save files for offline use. The drive allows you to add, edit, and delete files at any time. Your changes made on the drive will be reflected on your other devices and the dashboard on the website. It is this very feature that makes cloud storage so popular. Your files are accessible from multiple locations and can be worked on at any time.
Syncing any folder on your computer is also an option. As a result, there’s no need to copy the files directly to pCloud Drive, but rather to leave them where they are. This is a neat and useful feature.
pCloud Drive also allows direct sharing of files.
Linux, Mac, and Windows are all supported by Dropbox. After installing the application, you will have an option to create a drive.
Dropbox allows you to select which folders you would like to keep on your hard drive and in the cloud, and which ones you would like to keep only in the cloud. This makes for a convenient feature that allows you to save valuable storage space on your computer. The Smart Sync they offer in their pricing plans is an advanced version of selective sync (you can save files locally, or in a mixed state).
Files can also be shared directly from the desktop, but no folders on your desktop can be synced.
Security with pCloud & Dropbox
Servers with pCloud (owned by them) are located in the U.S. and the EU. When you register, you select where you want your files to be stored, and they will remain there and won’t be moved without your knowledge or consent. Our servers are spread across three different locations within highly secure storage areas where your files are stored. 15 different racks are used to store each file. Five racks or servers can be down simultaneously. If information is transferred from your device to the pCloud servers, it is encrypted using TLS/SSL to ensure your files’ security. If you wish, you can also subscribe to pCloud Crypto, which encrypts your files client-side. No one else, not even the administrators of cloud storage or government officials, can access those files.
The thing you should pay attention to here is pCloud Crypto. As a matter of fact, pCloud is the first cloud storage provider that offers both client-side and server-side encryption. Why would you want that? Why not simply encrypt all files on the client and disable any government access to those files? However, there is a large downside to this. Files that are encrypted cannot be accessed by anyone. In fact, the data cannot be understood by servers or processors. As a result, all possible applications, such as image previews, playing videos and music in the cloud, previewing documents, etc., cannot be done.
This is why pCloud offers both client-side encryption (zero-knowledge) where you can store your important files and server-side encryption where you can store music, videos, and other items. If you want to view them directly in the cloud. Still, you have the option of uploading everything to your Crypto folder and unlocking it when necessary.
Two-factor authentication is also available in pCloud.
There have been no security breaches on their record, and it appears that they will remain secure.
Dropbox files are encrypted with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) of 256 bits. Dropbox uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)/Transport Layer Security (TLS) in order to protect data in transit between Dropbox apps and their servers. It creates a secure tunnel using 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption.
Logging in with two-step verification adds an extra layer of security. Alternatively, you can receive security codes via text message or via Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) apps, such as Google Authenticator.
In 2012, Dropbox was hacked, which exposed 68M encrypted passwords and emails. It was patched immediately, but who’s to say it won’t happen again.
Summery of pCloud vs Dropbox
pCloud vs Dropbox: The two cloud storage services have been discussed from every angle. To summarize:
- With pCloud, you get more free storage and cheaper plans. It also offers lifetime plans.
- Their interfaces are modern and easy to use.
- Both services allow selective syncing, but pCloud also lets you sync any desktop folder.
- pCloud offers a wider range of sharing options, but Dropbox has a greater amount of bandwidth.
- Dropbox and pCloud both offer the Rewind feature that allows you to retrieve files. PCloud offers a longer period but requires a fee.
- PCloud offers better security and privacy without a doubt. pCloud’s client-side encryption is superior to Dropbox’s data breach in 2012.
- Because of its massive forums, Dropbox offers better online support. Both Dropbox and Instagram offer social media and email support.
It’s only fair to give the winners cup to pCloud after going over all these points once again. This company offers more for a lower price.
